New Zealand is a small enough market that reputation travels, and a legal framework that is quietly demanding. The Consumer Guarantees Act cannot be contracted out of, and where no price was agreed the customer only has to pay a reasonable one.
Both of those land on the same weak point: what was actually agreed, and when. A quote given over the counter and never written down is not evidence of anything, and neither is a verbal promise about how long it would take.

The Privacy Act 2020 has no small business exemption, so it covers a one-person shop the same as a chain. The privacy text says so rather than pretending otherwise.

Frequently asked questions
Is this just the Australian version with the flag changed?
No, and the differences are the point. GST is 15% rather than 10%, the consumer law is the Consumer Guarantees Act rather than the ACL, there is no section 103 repair notice here, the NZBN is not required on invoices, and the Privacy Act 2020 exempts nobody. The documents are written for New Zealand.
Do my invoices still need to say "tax invoice"?
Not since 1 April 2023. The rule now is to provide and keep taxable supply information, and the information can even be spread across more than one record. Plenty of businesses still use the familiar wording, which is fine, but the title is no longer what matters.
What does the Consumer Guarantees Act require of a repair?
Reasonable care and skill, fitness for any purpose you were told about, and completion within a reasonable time. If no price was agreed, only a reasonable price is payable. None of it can be contracted out of in a consumer supply, and section 12 also covers the availability of repair facilities and spare parts.
Does the Privacy Act really apply to a small shop?
Yes. Unlike Australia, where businesses under three million dollars of turnover are currently exempt, the Privacy Act 2020 applies to every agency regardless of size. A sole operator handling customer details is covered.
What about the Right to Repair Bill?
It is before Parliament and is not law yet, so nothing in your documents relies on it. If it passes, the texts get updated then rather than now.
